VELYCHKO.GALLERY represents the international unit of the performing artists Jérôme Dupré la Tour (France), Stella Kapezanou (Greece), Michalis Papamichael (Cyprus) and Olga Stein (Ukraine) and the curator Dimitrios S. Spyrou. The cognitive approach of the curator provokes dialogue and provides viewers with a deeper understanding of the artworks, fostering a more immersive and intellectually stimulating encounter that leaves a lasting impact on both the artists and the viewers. “Transformative Identities” invites visitors to witness the convergence of different artistic visions, each offering a distinctive experience and narrative.
“In a constantly changing world, people often find themselves in uneasy and difficult situations. In a number of cases, they have to relocate either by force or by choice. Warfare, economic recession, and pandemic crisis have made migration a main concern throughout Europe, during the last decade. Thousands of people have migrated to other countries for survival and in hope of a better future. But how do they adapt to the new environments? What is the key to their survival? As every living organism, in order to survive, people have to modify their way of life, and actually transform their identity. In any new context, people gradually form a new version of themselves, however not utterly disentangled from their previous life. Some elements remain as a remembrance of their past and serve as the base to construct a new better and stronger self.
For 2023, the four invited artists of Cyprus Art Villa Residency, Jérôme Dupré la Tour, Stella Kapezanou, Michalis Papamichael and Olga Stein, deal with the idea of identity transformation through the specter of migration. The works they created during the residency reflect their unique approach and interpretation of the transformative process migrants go through. The different cultural backgrounds, experiences, and artistic practices of the four artists provide the viewers with interesting insights on the values and multiple facets of migration. Even the objects and materials used for the new works undergo a process of transformation, acquiring new identities and value through the artistic practice”.
